Our immune system – it is a miraculous mechanism of our body that protects us from harmful substances and pathogens. In today's dynamic world, its tasks are not easy in view of the great variety of viruses and environmental toxins we live in. Scientists are conducting intensive research in this area, not least in connection with the increasingly widespread autoimmune diseases. Even though new insights into the functioning of the immune system are constantly being gained, many questions still remain a mystery to modern medicine.
In this article, we’d like to take a closer look at how we can support our own immune system through simple natural methods and small changes to our lifestyle. A holistic view of our body, our habits and our living conditions can sometimes be more effective than the excessive intake of supplements.
The underestimated role of the gut
Nowadays it is no secret that our intestinal system is in charge of much more than “just” food digestion. Numerous studies have shown that the microorganisms that inhabit our gut play a significant (and previously underestimated) role in our health. According to recent data, around 80% of our immune cells are located in our gut!
Therefore, we can take one of the most important steps towards strengthening our immune system by supporting our gut microbiome. The intake of “good bacteria” or so-called probiotics (e.g. in fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi or apple cider vinegar), prebiotic foods (e.g. garlic and berries) and polyphenols (secondary plant substances) can be particularly helpful. At the same time, it is better to avoid white bread as well as processed foods with high sugar content and preservatives.
The vital force of the sun
Vitamin D plays an important role in a strong immune system. The body's own production of vitamin D takes place with the help of the sun's UVB rays. This means that we humans, as well as our immune system, are naturally dependent on the sun. Unfortunately, many of us seem to be spending less and less time outdoors, which has a negative impact on the vitamin D synthesis in our bodies.
In the event of an acute vitamin D deficiency, it may be useful to take suitable dietary supplements (tablets, drops or sprays). However, more and more voices are expressing doubts that the natural need for sunlight can be replaced merely by the intake of supplements. This is because sunlight affects many more processes in the body than just the production of vitamin D. Regular sunbathing, possibly in combination with a high-quality vitamin D supplement, can therefore work wonders for our body and soul!
Immune boosting natural products
A number of natural substances can also have a positive effect on the immune system. The following natural remedies have proven particularly effective.
Echinacea is one of the most widely used natural substances for strengthening the body's own defenses. The medicinal plant is a real superhero when it comes to activating the immune system and can be used in a variety of ways for a range of infections. Even though echinacea is often regarded as a miracle plant in naturopathy, it should be used with caution. In certain cases, its use is not recommended, for example (but not only) in case of autoimmune diseases. Depending on the circumstances, in some cases it may be useful considering homeopathic medicines containing echinacea.
Propolis is undoubtedly our favourite natural remedy for strengthening the immune system. The precious bee resin is rich in natural active ingredients, including valuable polyphenols, and is often referred to as a natural antibiotic. Propolis is used to treat colds, viruses, skin and stomach problems and to support the immune system. You can find out more about its various applications in naturopathy here. We recommend sticking to organic products and tinctures with a sufficient propolis concentration (at least 30%) – you can find our favorite products here.
